Memoria Colectiva del IV Encuentro Regional Ecoversidades Abya Yala, en la Huasteca Potosína, México, Octubre 15-20, 2023

[Español] Memoria del IV Encuentro Regional Ecoversidades Abya Yala 2024

El pasado octubre, el Ecoverso se reunió en el IV Encuentro Ecoversidades Abya Yala, en la Huasteca Potosina, México. Fueron seis días sorprendentes de intenso compartir y sentipensar desde territorios y corazones diversos, de aprendizaje y desaprendizaje fuerte y sútil, junto a la Madre Tierra y nuestros ancestros. Es un momento revolucionario para la alianza latinoamericana, ya que caminamos hacia un mundo donde muchos mundos son posibles. Los horizontes y contornos del corazón se siguen expandiendo.

Fuimos recibidos por Tlalij Yolojtli uan Nemililistlij y la Red de Mujeres de la Huasteca en su sede en Matlapa, San Luis Potosí. Ellas son una red de mujeres campesinas, cocineras y artesanas que trabajan el territorio desde su cosmovisión náhuatl y tének. Han compartido su caminar con las Ecoversidades por ya varios años. El encuentro tuvo una agenda ágil y flexible para facilitar actividades emergentes y la mejoría constante, así como la formación de comisiones para apoyar en la lógistica. Además, cada día se apoyó en un espíritu animal del territorio anfitrión en conjunto con uno de los valores ecoversitarios.

Día 1: Colibrí / Huitzilin - Ceremonia

El primer día del encuentro nos acompañó la energía del colibrí con el valor de la decolonización, el espíritu de la re-indigenización, la celebración de nuestras raíces y nuestros territorios. Somos como colibríes que venimos desde muchos lugares, llevamos con nosotros los colores, sentipensares, y néctares del arcoiris Abya Yala. Nos reunimos para alimentarnos los espiritu, sanarnos, compartir vuelo y alegría. Al juntarnos, entramos en ceremonía, colocamos nuestras relaciones en el centro.

En el corazón del Centro Ceremonial Tamaletón, Don Benigno y sus amigos nos recibieron con una ceremonía de apertura tének, la danza de los voladores que recrea la creación del mundo. También fue el momento en que muchos de nosotros, ecoversitarios, nos encontrábamos por primera vez tras muchas interacciones por el medio virtual. Fue un instante mágico, lleno de danza, esperanza y las palabras de Elena que celebraban el territorio Abya Yala. ¡¡HAYLLI JALLALA ABYA YALA!! ¡¡HAYLLI ECOVERSIDADES!!”

Día 2: Mariposa / Papalotl - Emerger

El segundo día fue dedicado al valor ecoversitario de emerger, el aprendizaje a través de la transformación, elegimos a la mariposa como acompañante de este proceso, porque las orugas antes de convertirse en mariposas deben atravesar una metamorfosis, una crisis de la imaginación, cuya resolución es incierta, incluso milagrosa. Los encuentros acarrean transformaciones extraordinarias, desaprendizajes que sacuden nuestros seres y cambian profundamente quienes somos, coincidencias que nos llevan a ver el mundo de maneras distintas, que revelan nuevos colores, y manifiestan otras posibilidades de relacionarnos, para ser y estar en el mundo.

El IV Encuentro Ecoversidades Abya Yala fue bonito porque creó las condiciones para concidir como alianza. Nos acompañaron amigues desde México, Brasil, Chile, Perú, Colombia, Ecuador, Isla Tortuga y Rumanía, algunas de las ecoversidades que representaban eran: Casa Matla, CEPROSI, Red de la Economía Solidaria, The Emergence Network, Instituto Favela de la Paz, The Alternative University, El Semillero Casa de Cultivo, Resuena, Mushuk Away, Evolving Education, Open-Hearted Learning, Adventureversity, Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Transmodernos (CIET), Escuela Campesina de Educación Popular y Alternativas Sustentables, Colectivo Manantlán, Machtia, Cooperativa Oyameyo, Red Hilando Semillas, Herramientas para el Buen Vivir, Universidad Indígena Amawtay Wasi y Enlivened Cooperative.

También hubo ofrecimientos emergentes desde lxs participantes: círculos de teatro clown, movimiento, inter-juego, apapachos, tejido y bordado, yoga, talleres de constelaciones sistémicas, numerología, de corazonamiento aventurero con los árboles y el territorio, un conversatorio del caminar de las Ecoversidades en el Abya Yala.

La noche del segundo día se cerró con la Ceremonia de Duelo, un círculo para dejar fluir las lágrimas, las tristezas y honrar las penas, un espacio para acompañar en corazón a nuestros amigxs palestinxs que viven la brutalidad del genocidio en Gaza. Esta ceremonia fue también un llamado a la paz, un rezo para la libertad de todos los seres en el mundo.

Día 3: Tortuga de Agua / Ayotl - Emplazamiento

Las compañeras de la Red de Mujeres cuentan que las tortugas cuidan el agua, que puedes hallarlas en lugares donde su cauce aún sigue viva. La tortuga de agua fue la guardiana del tercer día, celebra el valor ecoversitario del emplazamiento, esto es: honrar, reconocer y cuidar el territorio. Una antigua leyenda maya relata cómo la deidad del maíz recompensó a la tortuga por ayudarlo a cruzar el inframundo. Desde entonces en el caparazón de la tortuga se dibuja la insignia del maíz, el diseño de flores, la vida misma.

La magia vive en los pequeños detalles, en la atención y en el cuidado. A veces olvidamos que la Tierra nos ama, que nos regala el placer de beber del agua de sus arroyos, la alegría de respirar, de moverse, nos alimenta de la milpa. La Tierra nos alimenta generosamente. Gran parte del Encuentro fue el compartir que se vivió a través del alimento. Las mujeres de Tlalij nos alimentaron generosamente con su deliciosa cocina preparada con sus manos y corazones. Sentarnos juntxs a comer fue muy bonito porque pudimos tener conversaciones sensibles y saborear juntxs los sazones y colores de la región.

En la noche del tercer día Agatha ofreció la meditación del Espacio Vacío. Más tarde, Camilo y Sierra facilitaron el Festival de Audiovisuales.

Día 4: Venado / Mazatl - Aprendizaje Experiencial

En la mañana un arco-iris pintaba el cielo azul del cuarto día del encuentro. Escogimos al venado para guiarnos a través del valor ecoversitario del aprendizaje experiencial. Dentro de la dimensión mítica, el venado aparece como un personaje creativo que se expresa a través del juego, a veces auspicia la cacería y en ocasiones nos confunde con sus travesuras. También es símbolo de maternidad y de crianza. Es guardián de los bosques, sus astas viven el cambio de estaciones, es amante del danzon y corre libre por la montaña. Así Ecoversidades, mucho de nuestro aprendizaje florece a través de la vida, de re-crearnos, al compartir experiencias juntxs.

Ese día fue nuestra visita al territorio. Fuimos acogidos por la familia de Gaby, en el bosque agroforestal de canela Tzikatl, en San Juan Tlajumpal. Un lugar con árboles grandísimos, hormigas y arroyos que corren por debajo de rocas enormes. Ahí aprendimos con las manos sobre el cuidado y cultivo de la canela, bioconstrucción, y escuchamos atentos las historias y el largo andar de Don Paciano. De regreso visitamos el río Tancuilín que era muy precioso.

Al llegar a Casa Tlalij se alumbró el altar de los ancestros bajo el cobijo del árbol guardián de la sede. Después comenzó el Show de Destalentos, un carnaval donde varios compañerxs demostraron sus habilidades sobrehumanas: cirquerxs, cantantes, payasos, bailarines y pícarezcxs. De repente, las astas del venado se asomaron tras el telón del escenario.

Día 5: Jaguar / Tehuac - Diálogo Inter (Trans) Cultural

Nos acompaño el espíritu del jaguar durante el penúltimo día del encuentro para practicar el valor ecoversitario del diálogo inter (trans) cultural. El jaguar es el felino por excelencia del Abya Yala, es reconocido por sus poderes para cruzar los umbrales del día y la noche, y de los vivos y los muertos. La cosmovisión maya relata que en su espalda moteada están dibujadas las estrellas. Algunos pueblos del Abya Yala cuentan que intercambiar miradas con un jaguar es un encuentro transformativo.

Viajamos al Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Valles a participar en el Encuentro de las Juventudes, una iniciativa cuya finalidad era compartir nuestra red de saberes con lxs jóvenes de las comunidades. Lo que aconteció después fue sorprendente. Pues la cosmovisión moderna, unívoca de la institución universitaria ofrece límites hacía lo que es posible. La visita de las Ecoversidades, los talleres y prácticas que compartimos, sugieren que otros mundos son posibles. Celebramos a la Tierra, hubo ofrecimientos ecoversitarios diversos, de medicina ancestral holistica, de ensoñamiento, de libre expresión en movimiento, desescolarización, entre muchos otros. Ese mundo que visitamos se movió un poquito. En la sede de Matlapa permanecieron algunxs amigxs quienes vivieron otra experiencia radical, de escucha tranquila, cuidado al lugar y aprendizaje con las infancias.

En la noche nos esperaba una asamblea, bailamos y después tuvimos la Feria del Corazón Abierto, un hermoso espacio donde intercambiamos objetos que tenían valor emocional para cada unx, y donde algunxs de nosotres descubrimos obsequios inesperados, mensajes que tocaron nuestros corazones.

Día 6: Águila / Coatl - Descubrimiento en Solidaridad

Durante el día final del encuentro, nuestro guía animal fue el águila, nos apoyamos de su medicina para explorar el valor ecoversitario de cómo vivir el descubrimiento en solidaridad. Ahora que nos hemos entretejido, nuestras alas son sostneidas por las increibles corrientes de aire de nuestra conexión ¿cuál visión llevamos hacia el futuro?

Por la mañana las mujeres prepararon el zacahuil, un tamal gigantesco dedicado a la ceremonia de cierre y a los ancestros del territorio. En la última asamblea, Yeyo y Aerin facilitaron la Ceremonia de Agradecimiento, un espacio solemne e inolvidable. Después hicimos una caminata por la paz con Camilo ‘camino en paz, bendiciendo la Tierra, me inclinó a ti, florece, te veo a ti, florece…’

Hermelinda y Don Benigno llevaron a cabo la ceremonia de cierre tének/náhuatl bajo la protección del generoso árbol guardián del encuentro. Se abrió el zacahuil, comímos y celebramos estos seis días de relacionarnos y senti-pensar como alianza Abya Yala.

Nos despedimos, nos abrazamos, nos decimos palabras de ánimo, el tiempo parece que avanza muy rápido. El encuentro acaba, algunos nos vamos, otros permanecemos. Pero queda la pregunta ¿Es este el final? ¿Nos volveremos a encontrar?

Nuestro Encuentro Abya Yala

Han pasado cerca de 100 días desde el comienzo del IV Encuentro Afro / Abya Yala / Latinoamérica. El encuentro concluyó, pero las amistades que hicimos durante esos seis días siguen latentes y vivas. También hay aprendizajes y desaprendizajes de por medio. Y cada quien lleva semillas consigo hacia sus mundos y sus vidas. La respuesta es distinta para cada unx, pero la pregunta es similar. ¿Qué nos alberga el mañana? Averigüiemoslo.

La conclusión del Encuentro Abya Yala, dio nacimiento a la Comisión Mapache, un grupo de amigues que se organizaron para apoyar con las tareas de amor y cuidado del espacio. Su nombre hace alusión a una transliteración accidental de la palabra ‘mapuche’. Muchos aprendizajes surgieron de esos dos días de convivencia pos-encuentro, una de estas semillas es el círculo de sentido y cuidado que poco a poco va tomando forma dentro de las Ecoversidades.

Reflexiones y Testimonios

‘Para nosotros la verdad nos dio como muchas cosas de aprender, de reconocer, y también de darle importancia a otras áreas, después de ese encuentro, nos fuimos a un encuentro en Chelem, un encuentro de mujeres, en ese encuentro fuimos solo visita. Nos dimos ese periodo de calma. Que veía se defendía mucho, y que en el momento de ser sede no le dábamos tanta importancia. Y luego volvimos a querer traer otros procesos. Tuvimos un encuentro de aldea. Estamos luchando por la ley indígena. Y siento que todas y cada una de nuestras compañeras, la referencia que tenemos “es como si hubiera viajado por el mundo sin tener que haber abandonado a mi familia varios días. Es como sí hubiera tenido en Ecoversidades, la oportunidad de vivir en otros lugares, u en otro país, sin haber tenido que dejar mi territorio.”’

‘(...) Un reto o semilla tras este encuentro, es seguir aprendiendo, es claro que es una pasadita, un asomo muy superficial y breve al mar de posibilidades que se desprenden del desaprendizaje, de las técnicas que toda la banda maneja, de los juegos que inventan, todo eso que construye nuevas relaciones.’

‘Justo hoy regrese a mi trabajo, yo trabajo como profe de yoga para niños en prescolares, y si siento un antes y un después de toda esta enseñanza que recibí que pudimos compartir, sobre que es verdaderamente la educación libres (...) entonces ya hay muchas formas o realidades diferentes que se pueden tratar, enseñanzas de amor increíbles, entonces aplicar eso a mi vida es como que gracias, igual me gustaría aprender muchas formas de educación. Siempre hay para aprender. La verdad estoy super agradecida y también con las personas de ahí que las llevo en el corazón fuerte, les tengo mucho cariño.’

'La semilla para mi fueron las relaciones, cuidar las relaciones y la sanación grupal. Me doy cuenta que tan importante son las relaciones en este momento de nuestras vidas. De podernos relacionar con más personas de diferentes lugares, de diferentes culturas, de diferentes sentires, nos hace crecer muchísimo más y a ser más compasivos. Ser mas realistas en cuales son mis creencias y cuales son mi educación, mi forma, mi personalidad y cuales son de las otras personas. Y cómo llegar a congeniar para que todos podamos trabajar, compartir desde unas formas muy sanas. Para mi eso fue muy importante, que puedo llevar a mis comunidades, todo el baggage que tuve lo llevo conmigo, en el sentido de tener más paciencia, de tener más alegría…'

'Tantos momentos tan especiales, la verdad me gusto mucho compartir tiempo 1-1 con el Mark, hace mucho que no compartía tiempo con alguien de su edad. Aprendí mucho de él. Me gusto mucho el momento de dibujarnos las caras. Me gusto mucho en general, ser espectadora de las transformaciones de la gente. Mirar al Devin, su proceso, de qué es esto. David y Luz, que lloraban, y estaban con sus cabezas, tengo esta idea. y como que estaban en las nubes. Las señoras. El momento durante el show de talentos con Devin, e invitamos a la señora de bailar, y su sonrisa cuando la invite, fue muy precioso, y bailamos juntos, y estaba muy linda. Me gusto mucho dar masajes a la gente mientras estaba ahí parada.'

'Lo que más me gusto del Encuentro, para mí fue, las señoras, la bandita de la red de mujeres, increíble, como estaban en el espacio, como participaban. despues me hice amiga, de flor, y le preguntaba, haber cómo se hace esto, y me explicaba. guerrerotas, tenían una energía. contar el proceso que estaban viviendo, aprender juntas, apoyarse, y acompañarse. No sabía que ibamos a la huasteca. Maestría, la Carmen es un ser, y lo poco que conozco. super guerrera. Se sentía bonito por el vacío.'

‘En cuanto a las semillas, a lo mejor mi forma es muy tangible, porque literal son semillas y literal están esparciendo, no se si recuerdan un poco al compañero tének que llevó al maíz y estaba un poco emocionado, y me ofrendo maíz que el cosecha, “te lo mando con mucho cariño”. Ya lo añadimos a la casa de semillas que estamos estableciendo acá. Ya estoy creando una red de casas de semillas porque veo que es una necesidad amplia en nuestros territorios, y es un gusto enorme poder consolidar espacios donde se guarde la genética de nuestros antepasados, en una diversidad tan bonita de colores, de sabores, de texturas, de formas. Y justamente me invitaron a un encuentro en Tlaxcala en Ixtenco, donde conozco a otros productores que se dedican a la conservación de maíces, y les compartí un poco de la semilla de la huasteca tenek. Entonces literalmente, he estado haciendo la parte de la semilla. Y me parece que es algo también que va a tener una repercusión muy bonita en la sostenibilidad de nuestra autonomía, de nuestra soberanía. Sigo un tanto con muchos sueños, pero sí mis sueños a partir de Ecoversidades ya son más globales, y eso sí lo agradezco mucho.’

'Después de haber participado en tres encuentros globales y dos regionales, creo que algo que se me hizo muy notorio, es que se va aprendiendo en la auto-organización de las conferencias. Me parece que aunque todavía hubo resistencia porque hubo gente que nunca había estado en una reunión de Ecoversidades y nada, cada vez hay más comodidad en esta agenda emergente que deja espacio para lo que quiere surgir. Y Se me afianza la convicción de que lo que esta en el centro de la red, el corazón de la red, es la relacionalidad. Cambiar la educación o re-imaginar la educación es un lindo pretexto que da una acción concreta, pero lo importante de esta red es la calidad de relaciones humanas, experimentar nuevas maneras de relacionarnos de una manera super intercultural y la cercanía de las diferentes culturas latinoamericanas le da una riqueza de coherencia a lo que va surgiendo. No sé cómo sean las demás regiones de ecov, pero creo que en América Latina, es muy claro ya que hay una vocación, que es particular de esta región alrededor de la educación, pero debemos empezar a cultivarla quizá de manera muy diferenciada de las relaciones que son necesarias para una integración más a nivel global.'

‘Quiero decirles que este encuentro yo lo divisionaria en varias partes, una de ellas es lo que le abonó a mi proceso personal de camino de andanza en estas cosas, y en ese aspecto, el escuchar, el apreciar y valorar la palabra de muchos de los jóvenes que estuvieron ahí para mi fue como inyectar energía bien bonita a como caminamos. A veces la gente que tenemos cierta cantidad de años, algunos de nosotros tenemos cierta forma que ya sabemos ciertos caminos y nos gusta caminar por lo seguro. El encuentro en esta parte abonó mucha energía para poder remover algunas ideas que ya estaban anquilosadas. Y eso se me hizo muy padre. Porque me parece que, conocer a gente tan valiosa, no quisiera mencionar nombres porque se me puede pasar. Pero hay gente que me marcó, y que a su corta edad, aprendí muchas cosas que me sacudieron y me hizo pensar que hay gente bien bonita, bien valiosa, que también está caminando, viendo el mismo horizonte que yo.

“Me vienen muchas emociones positivas de fraternidad, de lindas personas, de una semana bien digamos con mucha tranquilidad, [...] Fue muy enriquecedor poder hacer amistades nuevas, diferentes personas, diversidades de personas, de diferentes partes y que están un poco en la búsqueda de compartir sus experiencias un poco de salirse de los sistemas tradicionales digamos ya sea en la educación, en la salud y eso fue muy enriquecidor para mí. una comunidad muy diversa también muchos estaban conectados, habían participado en encuentros anteriores Y una comunidad muy generosa. Así es que eso principalmente me encontré y que me llevé y que me traje, tiene que ver con muchos aprendizajes que se compartió en la instancia. la experiencia de cada uno, su forma de ser, así que principalmente eso. se comentó un poco el árbol que estaba ahí también como símbolo y creo que también. Eso es lo que me llevo, lo que lo que me traje a mi comunidad, que somos parte de ese un poquito, pequeño como una hoja aunque sea nada, de un árbol parte de un árbol y que está estamos todos conectados a través del mismo tronco y cada uno haciendo desde su pequeña experiencia ,sus pequeñas prácticas y bueno es que cada uno con su aprendizaje y que en algún momento Espero la vida nos dé esa oportunidad de volver a encontrarnos“

“Para mí las semillas que dejó el encuentro, principalmente, casi en lo inmediato, me hizo transformar la forma en la que viví y reaccioné ante una situación compleja personal. Siento que a veces en nuestros procesos formativos tendemos a hacer más formación hacía lo externo, hacer formación que es muy importante que también es base para lo que trabajamos, pero a veces nos hace falta esta otra parte. Realmente ví una diferencia en la que viví esa situación personal y la forma en cómo resolucioné el conflicto. El encuentro me trajo un gran regalo, trabajar con las compañeras de la Huasteca. Y también me deja muchas ganas de seguir caminando en el proceso de Ecoversidades, para mi fue una gran sorpresa y una gran emoción, conocer a tanta gente con tan bellos procesos y bonitos corazones, y tan bonito caminar, y tienen una gran experiencia, entonces me gustaría seguir caminando en colectivo, tenemos una intención de trabajar cuidados, algunos que estuvimos en el encuentro, entonces estamos formulando algunas ideas y van a seguir saliendo muchas cosas. Me gustaría profundizar también los temas de la interseccionalidad, desde otras miradas, desde las miradas colectivas que tenemos en Ecoversidades.”

'Saludo desde esta tierra sagrada del Cusco, para decirles que somos semillas y hemos llevado en nuestros cuerpos a nuestros territorios, a nuestro río, a nuestras montañas y a nuestras semillas al IV ENCUENTRO ECOVERSIDADES ABYA YALA /AFRO/ LATINOAMÉRICA, para reencontrarnos y volver a recordar la sabiduría de nuestros ancestros que viajen en nuestros corazones por toda la Abya Yala... Que hemos vuelto acariciar nuestros corazones y renovar nuestra energía interior, que nos recuerda en cada forma de expresión el respeto y cariño por la Pachamama, el de criar y dejarse criar, el de alimentar y alimentarse de vida, el de entramarnos en comunidad, con bondad, con gratitud y con el gusto de dar y compartir.... Así mismo para recordar la profunda capacidad de crianza de los pueblos del Abya Yala en todas sus formas como un hermoso tejido multicolor... Aquí estamos volviendo a recordar que somos semillas y tierra floreciente en territorios sagrados. Expresar mi profunda gratitud a la comunidad organizadora de este encuentro que considero acciones de aprendizaje vivencial motivadoras, prácticas e interactivas de gran sensibilidad que puso en juego nuestras emociones que nos permitieron captar, recordar y aprender colectivamente. ¡¡HAYLLI JALLALA PACHAMAMA!! ¡¡HAYLLI ABYA YALA!!'

‘Intuía que las relaciones eran súper importantes, pero cuando lo viví fue como que wow. Si es como que las relaciones tienen el poder para transformar el mundo. Lo difícil es que cada persona tiene que llegar a esa conclusión por ellos mismos, no es algo que puedas decirles, les parece demasiado abstracto. Mi reto ahora es como seguir o plantar esas semillas para que otras personas vean que las relaciones verdaderamente tienen ese poder. Y es como el aprendizaje de la Huasteca que se me viene. Ahora que tengo la oportunidad de jugar con ello y de ver cómo puedo hacerlo, es todo un reto y algo divertido de hacer. Otra de las cosas que me llegó mucho es hacer esos rituales, es algo que en mi cultura estaba totalmente olvidado y solamente había espacio para la racionalidad y ahora lo pienso más desde el sentido, la racionalidad lo explica todo pero hace del mundo mucho mas aburrido. Precisamente eso, seguir, dejando espacio para otras cosas sin que la racionalidad deba estar justificándolo todo, entonces he estado empezando a hablarle a mis plantitas y están creciendo muy bien.’

'Yo creo que esas semillas, son semillas que están ahí y comienzan a brotar y tienen también una extraño acuerdo de almas que son para evolucionar y para crecer. Siento que esto sucede de forma transversal en la vida de una persona. Para mi, México fue una muerte de muchos aspectos, aspectos de como visionar, de como ver la vida, de como me gusta relacionarme o no, de aspectos que veo necesarios de transformación y de evolución. Una de las semillas mas bonitas que me dejo México fue conocer a Josefina y Pedro. Ahora vamos a hacer un espacio de partera en Chile con Hilando Semillas. Entonces, vamos a estar levantando el territorio a nivel de la medicina ancestral tradicional, van a venir, estamos aquí haciendo una linda alianza, un bonito trabajo en conjunto y estoy muy contenta porque gracias al encuentro pude conocerles en persona. Y también, va a venir Nana Vicky que es una partera del territorio de Michoacán, y vamos a certificarnos muchas parteras de Chile que no teníamos certificación a nivel internacional gracias a esta hermosa semilla.'

‘En este momento lo que está vivo dentro de mi es el sentir que lo que más se necesita ahora en el mundo no son nuevas ideas, o estrategias, o planes. Pero, más un enfoque en estar juntes, tipo abierto corazonar profundo. Intenté compartir con la gente de mi trabajo acerca de lo que aprendí y fue muy retador, porque mucho fue no-verbal. Fue más sobre el sentimiento de compartir un espacio junto con personas llenas de tanto amor, y tanta energía amorosa y corazones abiertos. Creo cuando nos reunimos en este tipo de espacio energético de amor incondicional y veneración, nos deja bajar la guardia y abrir nuestros corazones, y permite que el amor fluya a través de nosotros, da espacio a la apertura, al humor, a la espontaneidad y vulnerabilidad. Es muy difícil describirlo con palabras. Ame la caminata de la Universidad de la Aventura con Sierra y Andrea y algunos otros más. Otra cosa que aprendí es que en la tarea de decolonizar la educación, sí tengo esta mentalidad de siempre tener una agenda, es cómo sí la modernidad ganará [ríe] y sí voy por ahí, tratando de acorralar a la modernidad de una forma urgente, con la mentalidad de cumplir una meta, o lograr un objetivo, entonces sólo estoy cayendo de nuevo en el hechizo de la modernidad. Hay mucha más alegría y apertura cuando sólo permito que la influencia y magia de la otra gente y aquello que me rodea permee a través de mi.’

'Para mí estos días que pasamos juntes, por primera vez en mi vida, tuve la experiencia real y palpable de poder aprender y desaprender de otra forma. Y creo que tiene que ver que no tenía muchas expectativas, no me sentía obligada a participar. Se sentía muy auto-dirigido. Sentía mucha libertad para explorar lo que estaba necesitando. Llegue´un par de días tarde, en el inicio, había sentido que ya había un flujo, sentí mucho cansancio en la primera tarde. Dormí muchísimo, después del circulo tuve oportunidad para recargar mis pilas, hice tiempo para. La familia de Gaby, también se sintió fuerte. Elegí quedarme en la sede, porque tenía mucho trabajo, fue muy bonito, conectar con las personas. En la Feria del Corazón Abierto, tuve algunos roces, siento que sí hay aprendizaje, muchas veces habrán cosas que te choquen. (...) El Cierre del Encuentro, conozco a Ecoversidades haciendo esa ceremonía de apreciación, he estado mucho en negación de hacer lo de siempre, es un baile muy interesante, es super lindo, y siempre es muy poderosa, estoy muy agradecida de que lo hicimos. [English] IV Abya Yala Ecoversities Regional Gathering 2024

On October, the Ecoverse met at the IV Latin American Ecoversities Regional Gathering, in the Huasteca Potosina, Mexico. It was six amazing days of intense sharing and thinking-feeling coming from diverse hearts and territories, with a lot of learnings and unlearnings, together with Mother Earth and our ancestors. It is a revolutionary moment for the Latin American alliance, as we walk together towards a world where many worlds are possible. The horizons and contours of the heart continue to be expanded.

We were welcomed by Tlalij Yolojtli uan Nemililistlij and the Red de Women of the Huasteca at their headquarters in Matlapa, San Luis Potosi. They are a network of campesinas, cocineras and artisans who practice buen vivir from their Náhuatl and Tének cultures. They have accompanied the Ecoversities Alliance for a long while. The meeting had a daily agile agenda to accomodate emergent activities and providing reflection spaces for the participant, as well as the formation of commissions to support in the to support in the logistics of the gathering. In addition, each day was supported by a regional spirit animal in conjunction with one of the ecoversities values and orientations.

Day 1: Hummingbird/Huitzillin - Ceremony

The first day of the gathering we were accompanied by hummingbird medicine, symbolizing our process of decolonization, the spirit of re-indigenization, the celebration of our roots and our territories, that is being in right relationship. We are like hummingbirds coming from many places, with us we carry the colors of the rainbow, diversity of knowledges, sensibilities and nectars of the Abya Yala Region. We gather to nourish our spirits, for healing, sharing flight, to experience immense joy and inspiration. As we gather, we enter into ceremony, we place our relationships at the center.

In the heart of the Tamaletón Ceremonial Center, Don Benigno and his friends welcomed us with a Tének opening ceremony, the dance of the voladores that recreates the creation of the world. It was also the moment when many of us ecoversitarians met for the first time in-person after many interactions through the virtual medium. It was a magical moment, full of dance, hope along the reverberating Elena’s words celebrating the Abya Yala territory.

Day 2: Butterfly/Papalotl - Emergence

The second day was dedicated to the ecoversities value of emergence, learning through transformation, we chose the butterfly as the companion of this process because before becoming butterflies, caterpillars must go through a metamorphosis, an ordeal or crisis of the imagination, whose resolution is uncertain, even miraculous. Ecoversities Gatherings likewise bring about extraordinary transformations, unlearnings that may shake our innermost being and profoundly change who we are, they may led us to see the world in different ways, revealing new colors, manifesting other possibilities of relating, of being in the world, of emerging renewed.

The IV Latin American Ecoversities Regional Gathering was beautiful because it created the conditions to coincide as an alliance. We were joined by friends from Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Turtle Island and Romania, some of the ecoversities represented were: Casa Matla, CEPROSI, Red de la Economía Solidaria, The Emergence Network, Instituto Favela de la Paz, The Alternative University, El Semillero Casa de Cultivo, Resuena, Mushuk Away, Evolving Education, Open-Hearted Learning, Adventureversity, Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Transmodernos (CIET), Escuela Campesina de Educación Popular y Alternativas Sustentables, Colectivo Manantlán, Machtia, Cooperativa Oyameyo, Red Hilando Semillas, Herramientas para el Buen Vivir, Universidad Indígena Amawtay Wasi and Enlivened Cooperative.

There were also emerging offerings from the participants: clown theater, movement, inter-play, hugs, traditional knitting and embroidery, yoga, systemic constellations, numerology, tree adventureversity, mapuche worldview, a panel on the Latin American Ecoversities’ journey across the years, among many others.

The evening of the second day was closed with the Mourning Ceremony, a circle to allow tears to flow, for honoring our sorrows and griefs. A space to accompany in spirit and our Palestinian friends who are living the ferality of the genocide in Gaza. With this ceremony, we made a little prayer, a call for the peace and freedom of all beings on this Earth.

Day 3: Water Turtle/Ayotl - Emplacement

The women from Red de Mujeres tell us that turtles take care of the water, that you can find them resting in places where the water is still alive. The water turtle was the guardian of the third day, it celebrates the ecoversities value of emplacement, that is: honoring, the recognition and custodianship of place and territory. An ancient Mayan legend tells how the corn deity rewarded the turtle for helping them cross the underworld. Since then, on the turtle’s shell are drawn beautiful flowers, the symbol of the corn, the emblem of aliveliness.

Magic lives in the small details, when we put attention and care into something, magic reveals herself to be next to us, ever-present. Sometimes we forget that the Earth loves us, that she gives us the pleasure of drinking from the water of her streams, the joy of breathing, of moving our bodies, she feeds us with her milpa. The Earth feeds us generously. A large part of this gathering was lived in the sharing experienced through food. The women of Tlalij generously fed us with their delicious cuisine prepared with their hands and hearts. Sitting together to eat was very nourishing because we were able to have sensitive conversations and savor together the flavors and colors of this region.

On the closing of the third day Agatha brought to us her Espacio Vacio (Empty Space) meditation. Later on, Camilo and Sierra facilitated the Audiovisual Festival.

Day 4: Deer/Mazatl - Experiential Learning

On the gathering’s fourth day morning – a streak of rainbow painted the sky. We chose the deer to guide us through the value of experiential learning. Within the myth, the deer appears as a creative and playful archetype, sometimes a patron of the hunt, other times a trickster confusing us with mischief and spectacle. Sometimes a symbol of fecundity and maternity. The deer are the guardians of the forests, their antlers bring testimony of the seasons, they love dancing and running free in the mountains. Thus in Ecoversities, very much like the deer, our learnings and knowledges flourish in life, through life and experience, in the slow dying, and the quick renewal of energies. In our intimate sharing together.

That day was our visit to the territory. We were hosted by Gaby’s family, in the agroforestry cinnamon forest of Tzikatl, in San Juan Tlajumpal. A place with tall and ancient trees, huge ants, and streams running under green boulders. We listened attentively to the stories and the rich life experience of Don Paciano. With our hands we learned about the care put into the cultivation of cinnamon, which was also used for bioconstruction, and ate tamales. It was a quiet and kind place. On the way back we visited the Tancuilín river whose turquoise waters were very beautiful.

When we arrived at Casa Tlalij, the altar of the ancestors was illuminated under the warmth of the guardian tree of the gathering. Afterwards, began the Show de Destalentos (Untalent Show), a carnival or phantasmagoria where various participants demonstrated their superhuman abilities: circus performers, singers, clowns, dancers and rogues. Suddenly, a glimpse of deer antlers could be seen behind the stage curtain.

Day 5: Jaguar/Tehuac - Inter(trans)Cultural Dialogue

We were accompanied by jaguar spirit medicine during the penultimate day of the gathering to practice the value of inter(trans)cultural dialogue. The jaguar is the feline par excellence of Abya Yala, recognized for its powers to cross the thresholds of day and night, of the living and the dead. A mayan legend tells us that the map of constellations and stars can be found on its spotted back. Some peoples of South America say that exchanging glances with a jaguar can be a transformative encounter.

We traveled to the Instituto Tecnológico of Ciudad Valles to participate in El Encuentro de Juventudes (Youth Encounter), an initiative whose intention was to share the gifts of the alliance with the youth of the communities. What happened next was surprising. It was quite an encounter between multiple levels of possibility and contexts, within the framing that the university institution provides and the possibilities that thrive outside of it, and also what lies on the cracks in-between. Ecoversities visit to the campus suggested that other worlds were possible. We celebrated the Earth and the territory, we held ancestral medicine workshops, invitations to dreaming, shared expressive movement practices, a panel on unschooling, among many others. Perhaps, the youth we met that day were moved a little, something had changed. Some friends stayed on the venue of the gathering. Living a radical experience of quietness, deep listening, care-taking of the place, and playfulness with children.

In the evening an assembly awaited us, we danced and then we had the Open Heart Fair, a beautiful space where we exchanged objects with an emotional value for each of us, a space where some of us found unexpected gifts, perhaps in the form of friendship.

Day 6: Eagle/Coatl - Inquiry in Solidarity

For the last day of the gathering, our animal guide was the eagle. We relied on her medicine to navigate and live the ecoversities value of inquiry in solidarity. We are connected now, this gathering has brought us into interbeingness. Our vast wings are supported by the strong winds and air currents that arose from our relationality. What now? What visions do we carry into the future?

That morning, the women prepared the zacahuil, a gigantic tamal dedicated to the ancestors and for the ceremonial closure of the space. After our main assembly, Yeyo and Aerin facilitated the Gratitude Ceremony, a solemn and unforgettable space. Afterwards Camilo led us through a precious walk for peace exercise which more or less goes: camino en paz bendiciendo la Tierra, me inclinó a ti, florece, te miro a ti, florece (‘I walk in peace, blessing the Earth, I bow to you, bloom, I see you, bloom…)

Hermelinda and Don Benigno performed the closing tének/náhuatl ceremony under the generous guardian tree of the gathering, bringing offerings with them, lighting the candles and the copal smoke. The zacahuil was opened, we ate and celebrated these six days of relating and deep-feeling as an alliance.

We say goodbye, we hug each other, we say words of encouragement, as time seems to move very fast. The gathering ends, some of us leave, others remain. But the question remains: Is this the end? Will we ever meet again?

Our Abya Yala Gathering

More than 100 days have passed since the beginning of the IV Afro / Abya Yala / Latin American Gathering. This gathering did end, but the friendships we made during those six days still remain. There is a lot of learning and unlearning that is still happening, I am sure everybody still carries some seeds, seeds that could change the world, our world, and our lives. The answer is different for everyone, but the question is similar. What does our tomorrow hold? Let’s find out.

‘This Ecoversities Gathering was described by most of us "as if I had traveled the world without having to leave my family for so many days. It is as if I had had in Ecoversities, the opportunity to live in other places, or another country, without having to leave my territory.” I think that receiving you in our venue was very rich for all of us.'

‘After this gathering, a seed that I carry with me is to continue this learning process, it is clear that this is just a small step, a very superficial and brief glimpse into the sea of possibilities that emerge from the unlearning process, from the techniques that the whole bandita handles, to the games they create, all that which builds new relationships.’

‘Just today I returned to my job, I work as a yoga teacher for preschool children, and I really do feel a before and an after of this gathering, with all these teachings you all shared together about what is truly free education (...) therefore, there are already manyfold different ways of how it can be taught, incredible teachings of love, so applying them to my life is like a big thank you, I would like to learn many forms of education. There is always something to learn. The truth is that I am very grateful and also with the people there that I carry in my heart, I am very fond of them'.

'The seed for me was relationships, nurturing relationships and group healing. I realize how important relationships are at this time in our lives. To be able to relate to more people from different places, different cultures, different feelings, it makes us grow so much more and be more compassionate. To be more realistic in what are my beliefs and what is my education, my way, my personality and what are the other people's. And how to get along with other people. And how to get along so that we can all collaborate and share in a very healthy way. For me that was very important, that I can take to my communities, all this baggage I take with me, in the sense of practicing more patience, having more joy...'

‘It strengthens my conviction that what is at the heart of the network, at the heart of the alliance, is relationality. Changing education or re-imagining education is a nice pretext that gives a concrete action, but the important thing about this network is the quality of human relationships, experiencing new ways of relating in a super intercultural way and the closeness of the different Latin American cultures gives a richness of coherence to what is emerging’

‘It was very enriching to be able to make new friendships, with different people, diversities of people, from different places who are a little bit outside the traditional systems, either in education or in health, sharing their experiences, whose learnings I brought here with me, the individual experience of each one, their own way of being. We are a little bit, small as a leaf, that even if it is nothing, we are part of a tree and we are all connected, each one of us doing from their small experience, their small practices and with their own learnings. I hope that life will give us the opportunity to meet again’

'It has already been three months and suddenly I realize how it went so fast, I also feel that three years have passed. As for the seeds, I don't know if you remember the Tének friend who taught us about the corn and was a little excited, he offered me corn that he harvested, "I am giving this to you with much affection". We have added it to the seed shelter that we are establishing here. I am already creating a network of seed shelters because I see that it is a great need in our territories, and it is a great pleasure to be able to consolidate spaces where the genetics of our ancestors are kept, in such a beautiful diversity of colors, flavors, textures, shapes. I was invited to a meeting in Tlaxcala in Ixtenco, where I met other producers who are dedicated to the conservation of corn, and I shared with them a little of the seed of the Huasteca Tének. So, literally, I have been doing the seed part. And it seems to me that it is also something that will have a great impact on the sustainability of our autonomy and our sovereignty. I still have many dreams, but my dreams after Ecoversities are now more global, and I am very grateful for that'

‘I would like to tell you that I would divide this meeting into several parts, one of them is what it contributed to my personal process of walking through these things, and in that aspect, listening, appreciating and valuing the words of many of the young people who were there was for me like injecting this beautiful energy to how we walk. Sometimes the people who have a certain amount of years, some of us like to walk on the safe side. In this part, the gathering provided a lot of energy to be able to remove some ideas that were already stagnant. And that was very cool for me. Because it seems to me that meeting such valuable people, I don't want to mention names because I might miss them, tut there were people who marked me, and at their young age, I learned many things that shook me and made me think that there are beautiful people, that are very valuable, who are also walking, seeing the same horizon as me.’

‘Greetings from this sacred land of Cuzco, to tell you that we are seeds and we have taken in our bodies our territories, our river, our mountains and our seeds to the IV REGIONAL ABYA YALA /AFRO/ LATIN AMERICAN ECOVERSITIES GATHERING, to meet again and remember the wisdom of our ancestors that travel in our hearts throughout the Abya Yala.... That we have returned to caress our hearts and renew our inner energy, which reminds us in every form of expression the respect and affection for Pachamama, to raise and be raised, to feed and nurture life, to weave us into community, with kindness, gratitude and the joy of giving and sharing..... Also to remember the profound capacity of the Abya Yala peoples to nurture in all its forms as a beautiful multicolored fabric.... Here we are remembering again that we are seeds and flourishing land in sacred territories. Expressing my deep gratitude to the organizing community of this gathering that I consider motivating, practical and interactive experiential learning actions of great sensitivity that brought into play our emotions that allowed us to grasp, remember and learn collectively. ¡¡HAYLLI JALLALA PACHAMAMA!! ¡¡HAYLLI ABYA YALA!!’ -

‘What is alive for me right now, is this awareness that I feel that what is most needed in the world right now is not new ideas, or strategies. Or plans, But more just a focus of being together in a sort of deep open heartedness, open heartened space, I tried to share with my staff about what I learned and it was very challenging, because so much of what I learned was non verbal, it was more about the feeling of being together in a space with people, with so much love, with so much loving energy and open heartedness. I think when we are together in this kind of space It allows us to let our guard down, to open our own hearts, to allow love to come through us, to allow openness, humor, spontaneity, vulnerability, I loved the Adventureversity walk that I did with Sierra and Andrea and a few others. Another thing I learned is, when trying to do the work of decolonize education, if I have this mindset of always having an agenda, its like modernity wins (laughs) if I go around just trying to pin modernity in a very urgent, goal minded, oriented way, I am just reenacting the spell of modernity. There is a lot of joy and openness when I just allow more influence from other people. And from what is around me.

‘For me, these days we spent together, for the first time in my life, I had the real and tangible experience of being able to learn and unlearn in another way. And I think it has to do with the fact that I didn't have a lot of expectations, I didn't feel obligated to participate. It felt very self-directed. I felt a lot of freedom to explore what I was needing. I was 'a couple of days late. In the beginning I had felt that there was already a flow, I felt very tired in the first afternoon. I slept a lot, after the circle I had a chance to recharge my batteries. The visit to Gaby's family also felt pretty strong. During the Youth Day I chose to stay at the gathering venue, because I had a lot of work pending, it was very nice, connecting with people. At the Open Heart Fair, I had some friction, I feel that where there is learning, many times there will be things that will shock you (...) The Closing of the Gathering, I know that the ceremony of appreciation is a tradition within Ecoversities, I have been a lot in denial over doing the usual. Yet it is a very interesting dance, it is super nice, and it is always very powerful, I am very grateful that we did it. It made me laugh and cry a lot. I feel like there's a lot of room to learn from the new and there's also a lot of things to learn when you follow a tradition, in doing one thing over and over again.'

‘For me, the seeds left by the gathering made me transform the way I lived and reacted to a complex personal situation. I feel that sometimes in our formative processes we tend to do formation more towards the external, which may be very important as a basis for what we work for, but sometimes this other part is missing. I really saw a difference in the way I lived through this personal situation and the way I revolutionized the conflict. The gathering brought me a great gift, to work with the compañeras of the Huasteca. For me it was a great surprise and a great emotion to meet so many people with such beautiful processes and beautiful hearts, and such a beautiful path, with so much great experience, so I would like to continue walking collectively. Some of us who were at the gathering have the intention of working together on sense-making and care, so we are formulating some ideas and many things will continue to come out. I would also like to deepen the issues of intersectionality, from other perspectives, coming collectively from the Ecoversities Alliance'.

'I believe that those seeds are there, they are starting to sprout, and they also have a strange soul agreement going on, to evolve and to grow. I feel that this happens transversally in a person's life. For me, Mexico was a death of many aspects, aspects of how I see, how I see life, how I like to relate or not, aspects that I see as necessary for transformation and evolution. One of the most beautiful seeds that Mexico left me was meeting Josefina and Pedro. Now we are going to make a midwifery space in Chile with Hilando Semillas. So, we are going to be restoring the territory at the level of traditional ancestral medicine, they are coming to visit, we are making a beautiful alliance here, a beautiful work together and I am very happy because thanks to the meeting I was able to meet them in person. And also, Nana Vicky is coming, she is a midwife from the territory of Michoacán, and thanks to this beautiful seed, we are going to certify many midwives from Chile who did not have international certification’

'I had an intuition that relationships were super important, but when I lived it I was like wow! Yeah it's like relationships have the power to transform the world. The hard thing is that each person has to come to that conclusion for themselves, it's not something you can tell them, it seems too abstract to them. My challenge now is how to follow or plant those seeds so that other people realizes that relationships really do have that power. And this is the learning from La Huasteca that's coming to me. Now that I have the opportunity to play with it and see how I can do it, it's challenging and somehow fun to do. Another thing that came to me a lot is to do those rituals, it is something that in my culture was totally forgotten, since there was only space for rationality. Now I think more from the sensing, rationality explains everything but makes the world much more boring. Precisely that, my hope is to continue leaving space for other things without rationality having to justify everything, so I have been starting to talk to my little plants and they are growing quite well.'

So many special moments, I really enjoyed sharing 1-1 time with Mark, it's been a long time since I shared time with someone his age. I learned a lot from him. I really enjoyed the moment of drawing each other's faces. In general, I enjoyed being a spectator of people's transformations. Watching Devin, his process, going like what is this about? David and Luz, who were crying, being inside their heads, and then going I have this idea! and later they were sort of being inside the clouds. The ladies. The moment during the talent show with Devin, and we invited this lady to dance, and seeing her smile when I asked her, was very beautiful, and we danced together, and she was very pretty. I really enjoyed giving massages to people while I was standing there.' -

‘What I liked most about the Gathering, for me, were the ladies, ‘la bandita de la Red de Mujeres’, incredible, how they were in the space, how they participated. later I became friends with Flor, and I asked her, "How do you do this? Guerreras, they had such an energy, telling about the process they were going through, learning together, supporting each other, and accompanying each other. I didn't know we were going to the Huasteca. Mastery, Carmen is a being, the little I know of her. super guerrera. The empty space felt beautiful.’

‘During the opening ceremony it felt as if there where all these dazzling particles or veil of shiny stuff in the air, I felt very emotional over Camilo's song. I interacted with many people. I think all the moments with Camilo were very special. I was confided words full of love and courage. I had not smiled this much in a long time. It was like being reborn in the heart of this world.’
