DNS The Necessary Teacher Training College

DNS – The Necessary Teacher Training College is a non-traditional teacher education which offers a 4-year international bachelor’s degree in pedagogy. The DNS programme combines hands-on experiences with theoretical knowledge, emphasising a learning by doing approach and community living. Our 4-year Bachelor Programme aims to enable its students to become global citizens and proficient educators, able to act and meet the challenges of the future.

The DNS programme is tightly intertwined with a lifestyle, which demands that the students and teachers live together and go through some of the different aspects of the human experience – in a cooperative way. For this reason, DNS can be described as an intentional community with an educational twist.

Denmark, Europe

The DNS programme aims to equip students to become proficient teachers, educators or pedagogues who understand what is important in this world, and how they can act to meet the challenges of the future.

The old and outdated idea that the teacher is the main figure in the classroom does not suit the society of tomorrow. Therefore at DNS, the students are together with the teacher at the centre of their education. Learning happens through an experiential hands-on, activity-based programme. Together with your teammates, you will take ownership of your learning experience, acting as the driving force of your own education.

Acquiring knowledge, and being aware of what is going on in the world, does not only mean to read books, articles or watch documentaries. It also means to travel, to talk with people from different countries and to face the different realities that people live in. We explore the Global reality in the first year through a 4-month bus travel.

The bus travel to North Western Africa pushes our students to develop a global perspective, throughout the programme students understand the reality of our society today and the big issues of our time in theory and practice, be it climate change, poverty, inequality, human rights, sustainability or education.

The DNS students are exposed to a variety of very ‘real’ and relevant issues where they learn about the world and about other societies, and by doing so they put their own culture and beliefs into perspective.

At our campus in Denmark we live, work, and study collectively. The students and teachers run the college together – we make decisions by consensus democracy. We have a rich cultural life with over 20 different nationalities sharing wisdom and experiences. Hence our programme is much more than just becoming a good educator. Above all, it is a school of life.
