Anurvana – Theatre for Change, India

“Theatre for Change” empowers slum youth through theatre. As these young individuals embark on their creative journey, they not only hone their artistic talents but also learn behind-the-state aspects of set design, costume design, lights, etc. which will eventually help turn their passion into profession.

More importantly, the objective is for leaders to discover the profound power of self-expression and personal growth. Beyond the spotlight, they learn to make a positive impact on society by challenging stereotypes and amplifying their voices.

Offerings come in the form of Free-of-cost workshops to learn acting, improvisation, self-expression, and training sessions to learn professional aspect of theatre production like playwriting, set design, costume, lightning, using recycled material to design props and costumes.

About Anurvana

“Anurvana, a philanthropic entity, is deeply rooted in the heart of Delhi, India, with a mission to uplift children and young adults residing in slums. We firmly believe that the power of Art can be harnessed as a catalyst to break the chains of poverty. Our aim is to equip these young minds with the necessary tools and skills that will pave the way for their success in life.

We have identified theatre as an influential medium for fostering personal growth and self-discovery. Our unique initiative, ‘Theatre for Change’, is designed to help children cultivate attributes such as confidence, empathy, curiosity, and perseverance. Moreover, it also enhances their social awareness, making them more attuned to the world around them.

Our team is a vibrant mix of individuals who share a common passion and dedication towards transforming the lives of these children and young adults from slums. We firmly believe in the potential of every individual to excel, irrespective of their socio-economic background.

We consider ourselves fortunate to have the opportunity to work closely with these children and young adults, guiding them towards achieving their dreams. Our gratitude extends to our generous donors, selfless volunteers, and dedicated interns, whose invaluable support fuels our mission and makes our work possible. Their contributions play a pivotal role in helping us bring about a positive change in the lives of these young individuals.”

“We recently achieved success in our pilot project  “Theatre for Change.” We collaborated with an organization Learning by Locals (LBL), which is based in Sanjay Colony, Okhla Phase 2. LBL works with children from the slums. Through this collaboration, we worked with nine children and youth. They had the opportunity to perform in an event called WISH (Women’s Initiative for Social Harmony) on March 17th. The play they performed was entirely created by the students, and its theme centred around women’s empowerment.”
