As the Ecoversities Alliance, we are a network with the question on how education and learning can look like if it is on service of life/spiritualities/earth/ecologies/territories?
We are not an organization, we are a trans-local network with not a very common configuration. We like to think of ourselves as a large circle of friends weaving our dreams together, with mutual respect and appreciation for each other’s diverse cultures, experiences, attributes, and gifts and a shared passion for the natural world and the myriad other Earthlings that share our beautiful planet.
Ecoversities is so vast, so diverse, so alive, and so constantly evolving, the best term in human language we can find for it is “mycelial” (mycelial, الفطريات, mycélien, miceliale, μυκήλιο, मायसेलियल, תפטיר, 菌糸, 균사체, میسلیوم, មីសសេលី, ໄມຊີເລຍ, takucelial, grzybnia, мицелиальный, Te mau nota, misel, міцелій, ไมซีเลียล, sợi nấm, )— like the underpinnings of all that sustain us and all of Gaia’s life forms, weaving an intricate, complex, pulsing, ever-emerging tapestry of learning (and unlearning) spaces, projects, programs, and, above all, relationships. It also reflects on the eco- from the Greek root oikos- meaning “home”, honoring the dimension of place, of the local, our economies and ecologies, hence the name “eco-versities”.
The crisis we are in indicates that we are brushing up against the limits of human reason. It is time we re-activate our diverse perceptions, senses, intuitions and entanglement with the more-than-human world.
There are multiple ways for you to access the alliance and get a better feel for how you might contribute and thrive as we continue to use our imaginations to transform learning spaces in our communities and strengthen connections around the world. And once you’re feeling a little more comfortable thanks to our warm loving welcomes, think about joining one of our service circles to contribute your gifts to the work needed to keep Ecoversities thriving.
